Stag Do!

...in which I am not here.

Today is Saira's Very Significant Other's stag do. So I'm having a shower in a minute and then going out.

This also means that I haven't got the faintest idea what I'll be eating today, but I will probably be drinking enough beer to take me well over my syns limit...unless I manage to resist, which is unlikely. So there we go.

Run time!

...in which my mind probably wanders a bit.

(Run time as opposed to design time. This is a programmer thing, you can ignore it. Unless you want me to explain it...no? No, didn't think so).

This morning I ran 4.8 miles in 45 minutes. If I'd tried to do that 6 months ago there's a better than even chance that I'd have keeled over halfway around; even briskly walking it would have caused me to get out of breath (probably within the first mile). I ran in the morning today because it is the Elder Teen's prom tonight (when did proms become a thing in the UK?)...I will probably run again tomorrow morning, since I shall spend the afternoon driving go-karts around very fast and the evening engaged in beer drinking).

This wasn't one of the reasons I originally joined Slimming World; I did want to feel a bit more healthy (and in fact I feel about a hundred times more healthy; I have more energy, I feel more alert and I'm generally much fitter) but a side effect of that has been that I can now run much further than I've been able to since the half marathon, and without feeling anywhere near as tired.

The picture on the left below is why I decided to slim down (not just that picture - the aggregate of years of living unhealthily and really starting to feel its effects as I hit my 40s):

The picture on the left is August 2012; the one on the right is a couple of weeks ago. The t-shirt on the left is a large; on the right I'm wearing a Medium (although they're different manufacturers so there's not much difference).

I have been told by 3 separate ladies in the last week that I look "amazing". (Okay, one of them was Claire the lovely SW consultant and it's part of her job to make us feel good about ourselves, but it still counts)! That is what Claire calls a "non-scale victory"...it feels good that people have noticed.

I am very close to my target now (4 pounds to go) but I still have a bit of a belly and slight man-boobs, so it's quite likely I will lower my target a bit - I have a very clear image of how I want to look when I have no shirt on and it doesn't involve a belly or man-boobs, plus I will still be in the overweight range for my height at my current target.

So, there we go. Sorry, that did ramble about a bit...but to sum it up I'm glad I joined Slimming World.

Too little too late

....in which I am too tired to write anything much

Nothing much has happened today. Or at least nothing you'd want to hear about, unless you care about how you can use an ImmediatePostData attribute to force a message to be sent to a server before it normally would in a software framework I use sometimes. Or you're interested in how long it can take a domain transfer from one registrar to another to happen even after you've unlocked it and got an EPP code.

Also I'm tired (probably because I haven't done much today) so here's what I ate today...I promise I'll make more effort tomorrow. This is feeling like a really long week so far...I can't believe it's only Thursday.

Oops...

I managed to forget to do a blog post yesterday, thanks to a combination of laziness, forgetfulness, parenting, world of warcraft and tennis. Must try harder.

Here's yesterday's menu...another post will be forthcoming later:

The all-pervasive football

...in which I consider the far-reaching nature of sport

A couple of friends and I have had a Skype Instant Messaging conversation going for the best part of a year now*. We are from different countries (Belgium/Netherlands/UK), we hold broadly similar views about a lot of things (and wildly different views about some others), and you would be hard pressed to find 3 people who are less interested in football (except when the younger teen is playing, in which case I become interested).

*(edit for the sake of accuracy - one of the other participants has pointed out that the conversation has been going since at least April 2013, so a bit more than a year).

In fact the chances are that if one of us died tomorrow the average enthusiasm for football in our nation would actually go up. So it was quite a bizarre experience for the three of us to find ourselves discussing whether Robben dived or not in the Netherlands vs Mexico game, whether the penalty was justified, and how theatrical or otherwise his reaction was. There you go, you can't even get away from football in this little corner of the Internet...the world cup seems to have made us all football fans to some degree.

With that in mind, here's a link to an amusing but serious video about FIFA (some bad language):

Now on to diet and exercise *Wiggles hands in a Wayne's World style transition*

I have to avoid having too many Syns early on this week because of the upcoming stag do. Slimming World have the following to say about saving Syns for the week:

"At Slimming World we don't recommend that you save all your Syns up for the week, just so you can have a few drinks on a Saturday night. Depriving yourself throughout that week is like putting yourself in a tight corset. Before Saturday night arrives, that corset could well have been flung off, and your eating plan been pushed aside for the week…then the month… then the year."

(From here - this requires a Slimming World log on).

I do not struggle with saving my syns up for the week; it's the approach that I have always taken, largely because there's nothing with syns in it that I really want that wouldn't take me well over the recommended daily intake (yes, I could theoretically have one packet of crisps, but I know it's not likely to happen so unless I'm absolutely positive that I'll only eat a single packet I find it better not to start).

Being on Slimming World hardly feels like I'm depriving myself anyway. I didn't drink in the week (often..well, not very often) before I started, so only drinking at weekends doesn't seem a hardship, and I've actually come to prefer fruit and pickled onions and other healthy snacks to the stuff I used to eat; I feel about 100 times better than I did when I started and that helps keep me on track too.

Clearly what works for one person might not work for another, so if you're on Slimming World I would follow their advice unless you're sure that you can manage without treats in the week (or can replace the treats with more healthy stuff).

Tuesday 1st July

(That's not right, is it? It can't really be halfway through the year already...)
Healthy A: Milk. Yes, again.

Breakfast

Wholemeal roll (healthy b) with bacon & cherry tomatoes

Lunch

Baked potato with beans & super rice

Dinner

Slimming world chips with pastry-less quiche (bacon, onions, tomatoes, spring onions, yellow pepper, mushrooms, cottage cheese, eggs) with runner beans, sweetcorn & broccoli (that's the veg I have to make so that all of the kids get at least 1-2 vegetables that they like and A. and I get our 1/3rd of a plate super free, although the quiche is largely super free).

Snacks/Drinks

Coffee, yoghurt, fruit.

Exercise

45 minutes running (5.5 miles, took 48 minutes).

Rambling!

...in which I'm all over the place.

Advance warning: this blog post may ramble on a bit and be a bit stream-of-consciousness, because I'm tired and have had cider, so may not have my usual focus (hahahaha).

Slimming World stuff first...today was weigh-in day, and I lost 2 lb and got this

This makes me happy. I now have just 4 pounds (about 1.8 kg, for those who prefer measurement systems with less character but more sense) to go to get to target, but I am not expecting to lose any weight this week because it is Saira's Very Significant Other's stag do on Saturday, and I will spend half the day racing go-karts around (and probably losing very badly), and the other half of the day in various pubs.

The week after it is Oswestry food festival, and it is traditional that the turquoise princess  (she doesn't like pink any more) and I go and sample the food until we are stuffed, so it is quite likely it will take me at least another 3 - 4 weeks to get to target - I'm hoping that I can maintain my current weight for the next couple of weeks.

Talking of TP, last night she started singing "The Lazy Song" and after the first line stopped and said..."but if you didn't do anything then you wouldn't breathe, and then you'd die". That sums up pretty much all you need to know about our daughter (other pearls of wisdom...the first time she saw a Smart Car and was told what it was called, at 8 years old, she declared "well it doesn't look very smart!").

The Elder Teen has finished his exams now, and it's amazing how stuff like dirty cereal bowls and plates that have had toast on appear to materialise magically in the kitchen...I suppose at least it's the kitchen and they're not being hidden under his bed with mould growing on them.

I have had a couple of cans of cider to celebrate hitting the 3 stone lost mark, but I must avoid the temptation of eating whatever I feel like just because I know that it's unlikely that I'll lose any weight this week.
